First I had to write the Visual Basic server system program on a PC at NCR base. Note the variable "window size" that can set the resolution of the system right out to 250m. This was to accommodate the USA spoiler that was on the GPS system at that time; only the military had the codes to use the full resolution then. The software consisted of a database of locations and images and textual information about those locations. I also programmed in all the required logic and structure to make the decisions necessary to send the correct data back to the portable device on the street. This information had to be matched to the co-ordinates received from the given London location sent in by the portable device. The server was connected to a modem and hence into the public telephone system for two-way data communication with the portable device's mobile phone.
