The electronic bin had four separate chambers with four motorised flap-lids. Each lid would open up only when a material of the correct type was brought to the bin for that chamber. By this means it enforced recycling of rubbish into separate containers. It also had a built-in printer that printed out a shopping list derived from the thrown-away items. A back-lit large LCD display showed the identity of any object thrown away. Finally, an internet connection was provided so the bin could re-order from a supermarked, such things as were flagged appropriate.
